Workbenches are a crucial accessory for anyone that wants to carry out DIY jobs such as sawing and planing safely. There are a wide range of portable workbenches of varying price points and quality depending on what your needs are.
I have spent a considerable amount of time testing various workbenches to come up with the very best ones on the market.
Bosch Work Bench PWB600
When it comes to Bosch, you always know that the tools and the accessories that they provide will be excellent. When it comes to their PWB600 workbench, this is no exception to the rule.
From the off, what I really like about it is that it is already pre-assembled so it’s just the case of opening up the box and you’re already good to go. In terms of setting it up, Bosch claim that you take it from its folded position to its ready to use position in 5 seconds. For me, it took closer to 10, but this is still very impressive.
The construction of it is second to none, with it having metal legs, and a waterproof bamboo working area. Considering how strong it is with these materials, it is only 11kg, but it can hold up to 200kg of weight.
I used the PWB600 to plane doors and it was able to hold these in place very well and not shake around. The bench top when split can accommodate material up to 85mm in width and a depth of 34mm. The good news as well is that it didn’t leave any marks on the doors when it had clamped them down. Moving the bench top with the cranks was very fluid and smooth as well which made carrying out the work a lot quicker.
The working width is very impressive with it being 68cm in length, which is ideal for medium sized tasks in and around the house.
Whilst it may seem like a trivial bonus, there’s also a small tray that you can store your tools on which I really liked. In addition to this, there is also a ruler on the bench top which is a nice bonus.
This is a moderately priced workbench which offers amazing value for money and is highly recommended.

Black+Decker Workmate WM301
This is the lowest priced workbench on the list, with its price often fluctuating between £18 to £30.
I’ll point out from the start that this does need to be assembled and doing it was a bit of a paint due to the poor instructions. Having said that, once it is constructed, it’s actually a very good workbench.
It is composed of lightweight steel with a composite bamboo worktop that certainly feels sturdy and as a working width of 61cm and a working height of 76cm.
I also used this to plane a door and it held onto it well, and it didn’t mark the wood. Moving the jaws of the bench top wasn’t as quick or as smooth as the Bosch above, but it still held the door in place without issue.
It does take a bit longer to take from folding to it’s in use position, but this is to be expected based on it’s price.
I had also used this to cut several pieces of wood, as well as a general purpose workbench top to carry out a variety of tasks and it’s handled all of them very well.
The maximum weight that the WM301 can take is 160kg, which is still a respectable weight. I would say though that this is aimed at those that only do light amounts of DIY every so often and just want a safe and stable surface to work with. The price point makes it a steal for light use and is highly recommended for those on a budget.
- VERSATILITY TO GET THE JOB DONE: This versatile work bench is your go-to helping hand for various tasks. For use as a sawhorse, work bench or surface for a bench vice, it provides a solid worktop for cutting, measuring or assembling projects—any task where you need a sturdy surface or a helpful clamp to free up both your hands.

Pony 2 in 1 Folding Workbench and Sawhorse
For those that need a both a workbench and a sawhorse, this Pony is just what you’re needing.
The workbench has strong aluminium legs and has a plastic benchtop. This makes it extremely strong, but also light to move around. The maximum weight that it can accommodate when in workbench mode is 227kg and when in sawhorse mode, this is 454kg making it ideal for heavier tasks.
I really like how quickly it goes from folding to its in use position, with it being securely locked into place.
Unlike the other two workbenches on this list, it doesn’t split in the middle to accommodate items. However, instead of this there are 4 high quality clamps included. I planed a door using this as well and the clamps held it in place securely and did not have any issues carrying out this task.
I also really like that the height of it can be changed from a minimum of 76cm to a maximum of 89cm.
I also highly rate the larger working width of it, with the bench top being 79cm in width. This really does allow you to carry out the largest jobs with ease, and with the peace of mind that everything is nice and secure. Underneath the workbench is also a great storage area for your tools, which again is an added touch that not all manufacturers think of adding.
It is the most expensive workbench on this list. However, if you’re needing to carry out larger tasks and will be using this often, I would highly recommend that you choose this option.
- 2-in-1 Worktable: The folding workbench easily switches between a sawhorse and a workbench, adapting to various work scenarios for your convenience
