Too lboxes are a must for storing your tools neatly after using them. However, they also have the feature of protecting your tools when not in use, as well as providing a way to transport them safely and in out of your house.
To that end, I’ve tested a lot of different toolboxes at different price points to give you the best possible verdict. This has included transporting the boxes around the house, as well as outside and putting them into the car and driving around. This is to see how secure they keep the tools whilst in motion. I also did this to see if any damage occurred to the toolboxes whilst the car was moving around and the tools around the box moved.
I have made several recommendations based on different sizes and price points so that you can pick out the one that suits your needs the best.
Stanley Fatmax Cantilever Tool box
Stanley have been in the tools game for decades, and I’m always impressed with their products. Due to this, I really wanted to try out their Fatmax Cantilever toolbox. I’m really impressed with how sturdy the toolbox is, even though it is composes of plastic.
It’s very deep, and it can hold up to 25kg of tools. What I really like about it is the fact that it has three storage areas included in it. When you open it up, the top and middle storage area can slide backwards, revealing what’s underneath.
I found this to be a great way to better organise my tools, thanks to the handy dividers are in the top and middle layer. These trays are sturdy, and I was able to put a lot of spanners and screwdrivers on them and didn’t see any flex in the trays.
For the bottom section, this easily accommodate a wide variety of cordless drills and their batteries.
When moving it back and forth and then checking the contents afterwards, there was minimal movement in the tools. Likewise, I didn’t see any damage to the interior of the toolbox.
The securing latches are also very well made, and have a satisfying snap when you lock them in place. Once these are closed, the toolbox is also water resistant, which I tested by running the hose over it for a few minutes. The contents inside were perfectly dry.
An added bonus is that there is also a groove cutout on the top of the box. This is great for inserting smaller pieces of wood or piping and cutting it down to size, which is ideal when you need to make a quick cut and don’t have access to a workbench.
This is a very well made toolbox at a great price point and is highly recommended for those that have a moderately sized tool collection.

Ox Tools Tooltrek Pro Modular Storage System Toolbox
Well, that’s quite a mouthful for a toolbox! I really like the OX Tools thanks to how robust they are and also how competitively priced they are. I was very curious to see how their 3 tier system performs and was very impressed with it.
There are 3 stackable tool boxes included in it, all of which are securely closed by high quality latches. The smallest of the three is great for smaller hand tools and spanners, and also has compartments in the lid to store nuts, bolts, screws etc.
I also really like that the other two boxes can be customised with different trays should you wish to do so.
In terms of overall weight, this can carry up to 100kg. This is ideal for those with a large amount of tools and need to transport them around with ease.
Thankfully, there are also wheels attached to the bottom tool box. These wheels are large 9” variants. These roll very smoothly and I did not have any issues moving the tool box fully stacked using the wheels.
It is also fully waterproof and after carrying out my test, the contents of all three toolboxes were dry.
This normally sells for £140-£150 so it is a considered purchase. However, if you do transport your tools a lot and need the space and also weight capacity, I would highly recommend this option.

Stanley Essentials 19 Inch Toolbox
For those that simply need a toolbox to store their tools and don’t want to break the bank doing so, the Stanley Essentials is the perfect choice.
It has metal latches to secure the lid in place, and does lock it in very well. It also has a removable tray to effectively double up the storage of the toolbox. There are also compartments on both sides of the lid which can hold a lot of screws and bolts and anything else you can think of. I was very happy to see this addition to a budget price box.
Despite it being a budget toolbox, I was genuinely surprised and also impressed with how strong it is. However, one thing I should point out is that it has a maximum weight limit of 8kg.
It isn’t waterproof (although it doesn’t claim to be) and when running the hose over it for a few minutes, some water did get into the toolbox.
This is usually available for the £15 price point, which is excellent value for money. It feels very well built and if I was just looking for a toolbox for storing a small amount of tools, I would definitely pick this one up. This is a budget price with a great feature set and is the best option for those want a high quality tool box at the lowest price possible.
