Choosing a circular saw can be a pretty daunting task, and choosing the best circular saws can be even more troublesome. There are a lot of factors to consider; should you go for cordless or mains operated?
Another thing to consider is if a track guide can be used with the circular saw to get an exceptionally straight cut. Some of the new circular saws do have this option (at an added cost) to use a track guide, but there are still some being released that do not have this option.
Regardless, I have compiled a list of what I feel, during my rigorous testing, to be the very best circular saws currently on the market. This has taken into account the factors mentioned above, as well as the overall cost and the ergonomics of the unit to ensure that you are getting the best one, for your needs.
Bosch Professional Circular Saw GKS 190
Bosch have two ranges, the mainstream line and the professional range. I decided to try out a corded circular saw from their Professional range to see how it performs.
The first is the value. The price is often under £170 and for that, you’re getting a lot of saw for your money.
The blade has a diameter of 190mm, which means that you’re able to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. This blade can be set to a total depth of 70mm which is a great option for those that have thicker wood that they need to cut through. In addition to this, the blade can also be angled to allow a bevel cut to be made. This can bet set to a max angle of 5 degrees.
When using the GKS 190, despite it being very powerful, it wasn’t hard to use at all. It’s a modest weight, but also extremely sturdy and it’s clear that this is a high quality item.
I was able to use this for long periods of time and I didn’t have any hand strain at all. This is thanks to Bosch making the handle extremely ergonomic so that it can be used for hours on end.
Every cut I made was so smooth that you would never have believed it was made by a tool at such a modest price point. It honestly looked as though a professional had done it, which really lets the tool live up to the Professional name of the range.
One aspect of the cutting that I really found interesting is that there is a blower function on the saw. This works by blowing air in the path of the blade, ensuring that no debris gets in the way of the blade which could otherwise jeopardise the cut. The quality of the cut this produces is exceptional, and I am actually surprised that it doesn’t cost more than it actually does with how excellent the results.
In terms of dust extraction, you can hook this up to a vacuum cleaner, or you can use it a dust collection bag instead (not included). You do however get a high quality storage case.
The blades are also modestly priced, with a Bosch blade going for roughly £25.
One thing to note is that you can’t use a track guide with this saw. However, you do get a parallel guide in the box which really does help in giving you a super straight line.
Time and again, I had a truly flawless finish from this. If you want an exceptionally high quality circular saw that can be used for DIY and professional wood cutting, this is the choice for you.

Makita HS7611J/2 Circular Saw
Makita are well know for their high quality tools at a modest price point. I was extremely happy with the Makita during my testing. It is a corded circular saw, but the length of the cable is great, so you don’t need to be close to the socket.
It has an extremely powerful motor in it to drive the 190mm saw blade, with the motor being able to deliver a speed of 5,500 rpm. Despite the power behind it, I always had a great finish when using this.
I also found this to be a great weight, and easy to hold and didn’t suffer any fatigue from using it even for prolonged periods of time.
I really like that with this, I can do bevel cuts at a variety of angles, up to 45 degrees. You can also do straight cuts to a depth of 65mm. This is a nice feature on such a low priced circular saw. Further, it was easy to change the angle and also the depth of the blade.
The finish was always extremely smooth, and required very little sanding afterwards. However, it should be noted that the quality of the finish will also depend on the quality of the material that you are cutting. When using a circular saw, my opinion is that you should take the process slowly to ensure that you get a great, even cut time and again.
Speaking of price, it’s also important to note how expensive replacement blades are. These range from £10-£15 which is very cost effective for such a high powered item. I also found it straightforward to swap out the blade on the unit.
One thing to note is that you can attach this to a dust extractor/collection, but there isn’t one included in the box (although you go get a protective hard case). I have seen people make their own makeshift dust collectors in the past and attach it to these units, but you can also purchase one separately if you wish.
Further, if you wish to use a guide rail on this, this can be purchased separately, which will also require an adaptor.
If you’re doing light to moderate DIY work and you’re wanting a high quality brand, this offering from Makita is a great choice.

Ryobi R18CSP-120S 18V ONE+ Cordless Circular Saw
Ryobi is another brand that has stood the test of time with their high quality items.
I was very curious about how well a cordless circular saw would perform. First off, I was surprised with the weight of this, even when the included battery was installed on it. It looks as though it would be a very heavy device, but it’s not.
It has the lowest cutting depth on this list, with the maximum depth being 45mm. Likewise for angled cuts, the maximum depth is 32mm at an angle of 45 degrees. The depth and the angle of the blade was very easy to set as well.
Despite the cutting depths not being as big on this saw, I got excellent, straight lines every time I used the Ryobi circular saw. I was blown away that a budget priced circular saw could give such excellent results, as well as being from a well known and high quality brand.
I would say that due to the depths that this can cut it, that this is more suited to those that are doing lighter DIY work with it.
I do like that the battery and charger are also included in it, and since it’s part of the Ryobi ONE+ family, you can of course use other Ryobi batteries if you have them. With respect to the cutting time, you can get up to 32m of wood cut before you need to charge the battery up again.
This is actually pretty impressed considering how much power is in that motor driving the blade.
For those that are on a budget, but they want a high quality, branded, cordless circular saw, this Ryobi is a great option
