Painting a fence is a great way to not only make a tatty one look new, but also protect new and old fences alike. It can be really expensive to replace fencing, so it’s always a much better option to treat it from the offset and make sure it lasts as long as possible.
With that in mind, I’ve picked out my favourite fence paints that will make your own fence look amazing. Some of these can be applied via brush as well as paint sprayer, which is a nice bonus.

Ronseal Fence Life Plus
Ronseal are well known for their varnishes and paints, and as expected, I was really impressed with their fence paint. Fence Life Plus is a great value paint that has the bonus of being able to be applied to both smooth wood and also rough sawn wood.
I tried applying it with both a sprayer and also a brush and in both instances, the finish on it was fantastic. Personally, I preferred applying it by sprayer since it did it much quicker.
As the name suggests, it’s used to boose the life of the fence. It has a special component in it which actively adds protection to the fence, the same way wax does to a car. Ronseal have quoted 5 years worth of protection, and in all honesty I 100% believe this claim. An interesting thing about this is that if you’ve had heavy rain recently and the wood is still a bit wet, you can apply it to it. This is something that other fence paints can’t do.
Rather than there only being a few colours available, Ronseal have produced 9 different colours in the range. I would always recommend at least two coats of paint on a fence, and with the Ronseal, you can expect to cover roughly 30m2 with a 5 litre tub. It’s extremely cost effective and for that and the other reasons listed above, it’s my number one fence paint.
- 5 Year protection for both rough sawn and smooth planed sheds and fences.

Cuprinol Shades
Shades is quite an interesting product range from Cuprinol. One thing I like from the offset was that it offers an impressive 6 years worth of protection. It’s a tall claim to make for a paint, but with the high quality level of paint that Cuprinol produces, I’ve go no doubt in this claim.
Another stand out point is that it can also be used on brick, terracotta and stone. I tried the Cuprinol Shades on brickwork and was impressed with the results. I even used some on some old terracotta plant pots and it gave them a new lease of life.
I applied Cuprinol shades with both a brush and paint sprayer, and both methods worked extremely well. The finish was really nice on both smooth and rough sawn wood.
What sets Shades apart from the other fence paints on this list is the massive range of colours that it comes in. The Shades range is a great way to really make your garden fence look not only unique, but exquisite as well.
The colours have really been designed well, and it’s nice to see a fence with a more unique colour to it.
One thing that should be noted though is the price of Cuprinol Shades. Unfortunately, due to the high quality of the colour pigments in it, it is the most expensive paint on this list, and only comes in tins up to 2.5 litres in volume. Due to this, depending on the size of the fence, it could prove to be costly, especially if you apply two coats (which I do recommend).
On the flip side of this, you’ll be getting a unique coloured fence that is not only going to look great, but be protected for 6 years.
- Beautiful matt colour which enhances the grain of natural wood, with 6 year weather protection on wood.

Cuprinol Ducksback
For those that would prefer the similar level of protection offered by Ronseal, but in a more diverse range of colours, Cuprinol Ducksback is a great option. Much like the Ronseal, the Ducksback is wax enriched that really does protect from the harshest of weather.
One thing to note though is that with Ducksback, this is only for rough sawn wood. It has been developed with that specifically in mind.
During my testing, I did it on both smooth and rough sawn wood. On the smooth wood, the results weren’t the best. However, on rough sawn wood, the results were fantastic. It really added a new level of depth to the wood, and it’s something that I’m really impressed with. I wouldn’t say that the less than stellar finish on the smooth wood should be a negative point for it, it’s not designed for that. Also, unlike the Ronseal, it cannot be applied by sprayer, only by brush.
What may also hold some back is the time that it takes for it to dry before another coat can be put on. A minimum of two hours should be left between coats. For those on limited time, this might not be the best option for them. If these issues aren’t a problem for you though, and you want to have some amazing colour on your fence with 5 years worth of protection, Cuprinol Ducksback is the paint for you!
