This Bosch planer is part of the professional range which is geared towards those in the trade that are using this day in, day out. However, even if you’re an enthusiast that would be giving this lighter use, it’s still important to consider it, for the reasons listed below.
Ease Of Use
What I really like about this that even though it comes in at just under 3kg, it doesn’t feel heavy or cumbersome in the hand. The way that Bosch has balanced the planer our is very impressive. That, in addition to the ergonomics of it can help to reduce hand fatigue when using it for prolonged periods of time.
Within the unit is a high quality 710w motor. It does feel power when using it, but not unwieldy, and at no point was I worried that the power in it was going to cause damage to the wood. I was able to make precise cuts to the wood using this.
I also really like that you can set the depth of the blade in increments of 0.1mm. This really does allow for fine planing, which is ideal for those that new to this aspect of DIY. Likewise, it is also possible to set the blade to the maximum depth of 2.6mm in one pass. This is ideal for those that are comfortable with the tool, and would like to get a high quality finish in a short time frame.
Further, the cutting width is more than ample, with up to 82mm being able to be planed. This should be more than adequate for the majority of tasks, and it certainly was for mine.
Safety is also something which should be considered when using power tools such as this, but it’s not something that every power tool manufacturer does consider. Having said that, I’m very pleased to say that Bosch have put in a safety mechanism in that the blade cannot spin until the lock out switch is also pressed along with the trigger. This would be more than enough to prevent an accidental start up of the motor.
Whilst not an aspect of user safety, Bosch have also included a high quality parking shoe on the base plate of the planer. The benefit of this is that it means when the planer is put down, the shoe pops out and prevents the blade from scratching the surface it is resting on.
I have used other planers that employed a weak shoe system which eventually failed, but this is not the case with Bosch. It feels very robust and I have not had any issues with it at all.
Another plus point that I really like with this Bosch planer is that the dust collection bag (which is included along with a hard case) can be put on either the left or right hand side of the planer. The benefit of this is that you can still collect the dust generated from using it, but put it on a side that best suits your needs.
This might sound like quite a trivial feature, but I’ve used planers before that had a fixed location for the bag and more often than not, it got in the way and was annoying to use.
The other alternative would be to hook it up to a dedicate vacuum cleaner and extract the dust that way instead.
Results
Regardless of the tasks I threw at it, it gave me excellent results time and again.
I used this take a small amount of wood off the bottom of some friend’s doors and it carried out this task flawlessly. The power of the 710w motor coupled with the high-quality blade really did give an amazingly smooth finish to the wood. So much so that I didn’t need to give it a final sand down afterwards.
I also used this on doors comprised of harder wood and required a fair amount taken off the bottom. I did of course get a feel for the wood first by using the planer at a blade depth of 0.1mm, but after this, I was able to set the depth to 2.6mm and was able to make short work of the task. Again, the finish on this was flawless. This was without using a parallel guide. This was not included in the box and I wanted to use only what was included to get a fair an accurate representation of what you can expect from the tool.
I was also very impressed with the quality of the chamfering ability of the planer. It created a lovely, chamfered end on the wood I used it on, and it really added to the overall finish of the piece.
The blade has lasted extremely well considering the amount of use that it has been put through as well. This is something important to factor in as it can be extremely expensive if you burn through a blade far too quickly.
I would like to point out though that the quality of the results obtained from this will be dependent on the quality of the wood, as well as the speed at which the wood is planed. If this is done too quickly, or done on poor quality wood, it can really give a vastly different result.
Value For Money
This is one of the pricier, corded planers on the market. However, the quality of the unit, as well as the quality of the results that you can get from this greatly makes up for it. It is a considered purchase. Having said that, I’ve got no doubt that it’ll last you for many years.
When you consider how easy it is to use, and then compare this to how much it would cost to get a joiner to carry out the same tasks for you, it’s a no brainer.
One thing I would have liked to have seen at this price would be a parallel guide. This is instead an optional extra. By no means is this a deal breaker, but it would have been a nice addition to the kit.
Regardless, I would highly recommend this Bosch planer.
