Ratchet screwdrivers are a great tool for those that want to carry out the work more efficiently. They allow the same continuous force to be applied to the screw, so you wont have the worry of the bit skipping or being damaged.
There are quite a few ratcheting screwdrivers on the market, all of varying qualities. I’ve taken the step to purchase a few of them and carry out the same job using each of them
Wera Kraftform Kompakt 27 Ratchet
I’ve been a fan of Wera tools for a long time, with the reason being that they are extremely robust and offer excellent value at a modest price point.
Yes, there are cheaper alternatives out there (some of which will be covered on this list), but this ratchet screwdriver from Wera is one of the very best that I’ve tried.
I’ve got quite large hands, and despite this, the handle of the driver is incredibly comfortable to hold and use.
One thing that can make or break a ratcheting screwdriver is how easy it is to swap the rotational direction. On the Kompakt 27, it’s easy to do so, but not so easy that you would accidentally do it.
After carrying out various jobs using the Kompakt 27, I didn’t have any hand fatigue. I also like that there are bits included with it as well. A nice touch is that there is a bit holder built into the handle of the driver. It’s a smooth mechanism to move it back and forth and after a lot of use, it feels the same as it did when it was first taken out of the box. Similarly, a tool will take a few bumps and knocks as it is used. Despite this, my Wera looks as good as new. The long length of the driver also allows you to get into recessed areas with ease.
There are a few different configurations of this kit available on Amazon, which alters what bits you get included in the box.
It is a tad expensive, however, this is a screwdriver that will last you for many years. If you’re going to be a hardcore user, this is the one I would recommend that you get.

Milwaukee Universal Ratchet Screwdriver 10 in 1
Milwaukee make some truly excellent tools and this screwdriver is no exception to the rule. Much like the Wera, the handle on it is really comfortable, making it great for prolonged periods of time. The overall finish of it is also excellent and again, after a few drops it still looks as good as new.
When I was using this, I tried it out on the car which has some truly infuriating tight spots on it. Since the handle is a tad smaller than the Wera, it let me get into it a lot easier.
A big plus point is that you can extend of the length of it using the included attachment. However, if you don’t want to use this, it easily turns into a smaller screwdriver. This is something that the Wera discussed above cannot do.
The ratcheting mechanism on it is also great, and it make quick work of the jobs I put to it. The mechanism is very smooth and of the quality you would expect from Milwaukee.
There are a variety of different bits included with it. One flaw though is the bit holder itself. I wasn’t overly impressed that the bits (10 in total) are exposed all of the time. I would have preferred them to be concealed when not in use. It can sometimes be a bit tricky to remove them from the handle, something that wasn’t an issue with the Wera. However, the Wera is nearly double the price, so it’s a small annoyance for a big saving.
In terms of long term use, I’ve got no doubt that the Milwaukee will stand the test of time. The reviews from other users are excellent, and you always know you’re getting quality when it comes to this brand. If you want a long lasting ratcheting screwdriver but you’re also on a budget, this is the one for you.

Amazon Basics Ratcheting Screwdriver
The least expensive screwdriver on this list is from the Amazon Basics brand.
What really impressed me is that it doesn’t feel like a budget product when you’ve got it in your hand. Don’t get me wrong; it doesn’t feel like an ultra premium product either, but it’s a nice compromise in the middle.
In this set you get the screwdriver itself, as well as 12 bits. These are securely housed in the bottom of the screwdriver handle and pops up easily when you need to swap the bits out.
One point of crtitisicm is the advertised magnetic function of this. It isn’t the best, so if it’s something you’re in desperate need of then you might be disappointed.
I found the ratchet mechanism to be really good on it. It isn’t as smooth as the Wera or the Milwakee, but it’s also a lot cheaper than both of them.
For those doing small bits of DIY around the house and not wanting to break the bank on something that won’t be overly used, this is a great option. It’ll let you build some flat pack furniture without issue as well as carrying out light tasks as well. It’s a real dark horse for tasks like this, as well as a damn good bargain.
