When it comes to selecting the best claw hammer for the job, there are a lot of factors to consider. The first is the weight of the hammer. Depending on how much you’re going to be using it on a daily basis, you don’t want something that’s overly heavy as this will undoubtedly result in repetitive strain injury.

Similar to this is the material used in the grip of the hammer, as you’ll want to have something comfortable to hold.

It is also important to ensure that the claw portion, and the hammer itself are extremely strong so that it can carry out the task without causing damage to the nails that you’re hammering, as well as the hammer itself.

With that in mind, I have spent the last 12 months researching and testing a variety of different claw hammers. I tested this on various strips of wood, and nails for both hammering, and removing nails from the wood. By doing so, I can give you an informed opinion on what the best claw hammers are.

Ox Tools P082920 Straight Rip Claw Hammer

Ox Tools have really impressed me every time I have tried out their products. With that in mind, I wanted to try out their claw hammer to see if this is also an impressive entry in their tool lineup.

Whilst it doesn’t make an impact to how well it functions as a claw hammer, it does look really cool.

In terms of the weight of it, I found this to be perfect. Ox claim it is perfectly balanced, and during my testing, I found this to be the case. The handle is very comfortable to hold with the material that is on it, and even after prolonged periods of use, I did not suffer from any discomfort from using it.

With respect to the hammering ability, thanks to the hammer end being perfectly smooth, it was able to properly drive the nail in each time. In addition to this, I did not have any bent nails, nor were the heads of them damaged during the testing process.

In terms of the removal of nails, I was able to properly remove the nails from the wood, without causing damage to the surrounding wood as well. This is important should you be wanting to reuse the wood, and not have to resort to using a wood filler.

It’s also important to note that after the extended testing of it, it has remained intact, no doubt thanks to it being made of alloy steel.

This is the most expensive one on the list, however, if you’re going to be doing a lot of hammering, I would highly recommend it.

Bosch Stubby Claw Hammer

I have often found myself looking for a small hammer when it comes to battering in nails in confined and tight spaces and for the best will in the world, a larger hammer just isn’t feasible.

I did see a few stubby screwdrivers whilst out and about, but one that really grabbed my attention was the Bosch stubby claw hammer.

As you will know from my other articles on this site, I’m a big fan of Bosch thanks to their high quality, but at a modest price point.

When it comes to their stubby claw hammer, I was very happy when using it.

It is comprised of fibreglass on the inside and then coated in steel, and is extremely strong thanks to this. Due to it being made of this, it is also really lightweight, but at the same time, sturdy so it is ideal for manoeuvring it in tight spots, as well as using it for prolonged periods of time.

More importantly, I did not experience any fatigue when using it. Bearing in mind that I have rather large hands, this is a massive bonus as some smaller tools can cause this issue for me.

When it came to hammering, this performed brilliantly. It was able to drive the nails in with ease. I did try it with longer screws and it did require a few more taps than it would have with a heavier hammer. However, considering that this is meant for smaller tasks in tighter spaces, you can’t fault it for this.

I was a bit worried about how well it could remove nails, as well as splitting apart pieces of wood. In both situations, it did a marvellous job on this. I really couldn’t fault it at all, especially when you factor in that this is often on sale for around the £10 mark. This is an unprecedented level of quality and value.

If you need a stubby screwdriver, then the only option you should consider is the Bosch.

Stanley STHT0-51310 Claw Hammer

For those that are needing a full sized claw hammer for moderate usage, and don’t want to break the bank on it, there are a lot of options to choose from. In this instance, I decided to put the Stanley through its paces.

It is a well built, and lightweight hammer, but also very sturdy. One thing I would point out though is that unlike the Ox claw hammer, the Stanley is a two piece bonded hammer. This, over time, may weaken, which is way I suggest that this is for more moderate use instead.

Having said that, it feels like a quality item, and the handle on it is very comfortable as well. Much like the others on this list, I didn’t have any discomfort during the numerous hours of testing it. So far, so good.

It was able to drive in nails with ease as well, with only a few nails during the testing slightly bending whilst being hammered in. However, I wouldn’t class this as a deal breaker at all.

The nail removing functionality of it was also excellent. I had no issues at all with digging out nails with the Stanley, and it didn’t damage the woodwork either. I was also able to prise apart wood with ease as well, giving it another plus point.

I’d point out that it is half the price of the Ox, but again, this is due to it, in my opinion being suited more to moderate use, whereas the Ox would be for everyday hammering.

Regardless, if you need a high quality hammer and won’t be using it every day, this offering from Stanley is definitely the one for you.
