Hyundai make quite a few scarifiers, and in this review I’ll be looking at the HYSC1800E variant to see how well it performs as a scarifier, but also as a raker and aerator.

Ease Of Assembly and Use

This scarifier does require a small degree of assembly before you can use it. However, this shouldn’t put you off buying it. I found it very easy to assemble, and had it all put together in the space of just under 40 minutes.

Once it was fully assembled, it was ready to scarify the lawn.  However, you must cut the grass to a sensible height first before using this. Otherwise, this will labour the motor on it and can cause permanently damage to it.

The unit is fairly lightweight, and due to this, I found it really easy to move around the lawn. This is also thanks to the high quality wheels on it as well.

In addition to this, I found it very easy to adjust the height of the scarifier for my needs, which I would always recommend that you have on the highest setting initially. Again, this is to prevent labouring on the motor, which may damage it.

It really is as simple as pushing in the safety butting, pulling up on the handle and then pushing the scarifier around the lawn and let it collect the dead moss and thatch.

Results

I found the results of this scarifier to be excellent. The motor on it is extremely powerful, allowing the blades to spin at a great rate to pull up the dead moss and thatch from the lawn. Thanks to the collection box that’s included in it, it was able to collect a lot of this in one pass.

The collection box connects well to the  scarifier and all of the thatch was in it at the end; there was none of it strewn across the lawn. It isn’t a massive box, so you will need to empty it a few times. However, the fact that it is filling up is proof enough that it is working properly.

The steel blades used to remove this thatch are incredibly strong and definitely built to last. I also really like that in this version with the more powerful motor, it also has a wider blade cylinder which means you can scarify more of your lawn in a shorter time frame.

With respects to the aerator function on it, this was easy to put this cartridge into the scarifier to use it. Also, you need to use this on the higher heights, otherwise it will destroy the spring blades on it.

It did a really good job of aerating the lawn, and it also saves you the hassle when compared to using a manual aerator. However, a manual aerator will also allow you to go down deeper, so bear that in mind if you want deep aeration.

I really couldn’t fault either aspect of it though. I made several passes using this, and it successfully removed all of the thatch out of the lawn I was using it on. This was thanks to being able to use it across 5 different height levels to get the toughest thatch and moss removed.

Following on from this, the lawn has also been overseeded and feed and these seeds are growing nicely on the lawn, again proving how well this scarifier has worked.

Value For Money

This unit normally runs for roughly £140, which is fairly expensive for an electric scarifier. However, the cutting width of it, as well as how much thatch it pulls out of your lawn within a short time frame does offer excellent value for money.

In addition to this, the aeration function is a nice bonus, and a good way to aerate your soil bed, thereby preventing compaction of it. The alternative would be to buy another tool to do this separately.

Another thing to factor into this is the 3 year warranty with it as well. It’s good to see that Hyundai are putting their faith in a tool that will undoubtedly be put through its paces and as such, you’ll still be covered under the warranty. Should anything happen to it, you’ll be well looked after by Hyundai.

When you factor in how much it would cost to have a landscape gardener carry out this task, you’re saving a lot of money by buying this model instead.
