Greenworks is a brand that have been in the tool business for quite a while now, but I’ve never taken the plunge and bought one of their items.
I decided I would change that and pick up their cordless G40LM35K2X lawnmower to see how well it performs.
Feature Set
There’s a lot that I really like about this cordless lawnmower, so it’s tough to choose which aspect I like first.
One thing to point out that this doesn’t have is a rear roller. If you’re wanting stripes on your lawn, then this isn’t the lawnmower for you. For me, this wasn’t a deal breaker, but I thought it was important to point out before you read about how excellent this it.
Whereas other manufacturers only let you select a few cutting heights, Greenworks have built it so that you have 5 different cutting heights. The lowest height is 25mm and the highest is 70mm. The cutting width is also great at 35cm. Thanks to the larger blade, you can cut the grass more efficiently.
The height adjustment is extremely easy and only takes a few seconds to change it. It is also very sturdy and at no point during the testing of this did it drop down to a lower height. I prefer to cut the grass on the highest setting, or second highest setting. Even though it was a bit off the ground, it was still easy to manoeuvre around the lawn.
I also really like that it has been designed in such a way that it can easily fold down to allow you to save space in your garage or shed. Folding the handles up and down is very easy and quick. The handles are also covered in a nice, soft touch material for when you’re pushing it around the lawn.
As you’d expect, there is grass collection bag in the box. This is quite large at 40L. Of course, the benefit of this is that for larger lawns, you don’t need to stop as often to empty the bag. A nice addition to the kit is the inclusion of the mulching plug (more on that below).
Greenworks have also included 2 batteries and a charger in the kit that I’m reviewing. However, if you already have a few Greenworks batteries and a charger, you can instead opt to purchase just the lawnmower on its own.
Results
I was very impressed with the results from this lawnmower. There’s sometimes the suggestion that cordless lawnmowers aren’t as powerful as a corded one, but I didn’t find this to be the case with the Greenworks. I found that every time I used it, I got an exceptional, even cut on the grass.
In addition to this, all of the grass cuttings actually ended up in the grass box. I’ve used other lawnmowers in the past that really struggle to collect the cuttings, leaving a mess that you have to spend more time picking up.
The mulching aspect of the grass cutting also works really well. It dices the blades of grass into super fine sections. The benefit of this is that these can then break down and add nutrients back into the lawn and soil. Effectively, it’s adding another feed to the lawn.
With respect to the run time, I was able to cut my 25 square metre lawn 8 times before the battery needed charged. Considering that you get two batteries in the box, this would mean that you could get up to 400 square metres of grass cut before you need to charge the batteries again.
One thing to consider though is that this is dependent on the height of the grass. If you go for 4 weeks at a time without cutting the grass, then you’ll use the battery charge up sooner due to the motor having to work harder to chop it down.
Personally, I like to cut the grass little and often. For me, this is cutting the grass on the highest height of the lawnmower, once or twice a week. The benefit of this is that it’s not stressing out the grass plant by chopping a large amount off the top of it. In addition to that, it also means that there’s less clean up time as well since only a small amount of grass is being cut.
The batteries also charge pretty quickly, with it taking roughly 2 hours to charge both of them up. Greenworks batteries also retain the battery life quite well when it’s not been used for a while, so you don’t need to worry about them being flat if you haven’t cut the grass for a few weeks.
I did try this on lawnmower on grass that was longer, and it still did a great job on it. I dropped the cutting height down a bit so I could cut off more in one pass, and at no point did it labour the motor. In addition to this, it didn’t hack away at the lawn either, which is a pretty important aspect!
Likewise, I used it on damp grass and it still did a great job, although I personally prefer to wait until the grass is dry. I’ve never used it on grass that was really wet. I don’t feel that this should be done, regardless of the lawnmower as you’d just be hacking away at the grass and putting more strain on the unit.
Value For Money
Considering how excellent the quality of the cut is, I would have expected this lawnmower to cost a lot more than what it does.
This unit really is a great, cost effective lawnmower. The addition of the two batteries is a smart choice and you’ll always get a great cut when you use it. I highly recommended it, especially when you can use these batteries on other Greenworks products that you have.
