When it comes to overseeding your grass, or indeed giving it a high quality, granular lawn feed, it can be tricky to apply it. Many users will do this by grabbing a handful of it, and then throwing it onto the lawn. However, a much better option is to use a grass seed spreader instead.
There are a variety of these available on the market, at varying price points. Below, you will find out which ones I have found to be the best as spreading grass seed and also lawn feed.
Gardena Small Caster Spreader
For those that have a small lawn and don’t want to spend a significant amount of money on getting a spreader, this offering from Gardena is a great choice.
It can hold up to 1.3kg of seed and granular feed, meaning that you should be able to cover a lot of ground when carrying out these tasks.
There are similarly shaped spreaders on the market, however, I found these to be rather cumbersome, and the lid was not very secure at all. There are three different options for the hole size in which the product can come out of, which is great depending on what job you’re planning on using this for.
When I used this for seeding and feeding, I found that each time I did so, I got a nice, even spread of the product on the lawn. I used this on a smaller lawn whereby a larger spreader would have proven to be wasteful. I also like that you can used this to spread grit in the winter, which I found to be a fast way to grit my icy driveway.
It is also a lightweight device, but also very sturdy. I dropped it on the hard concrete and it didn’t even put a scratch in it. The lid also locks in tightly, so there’s no worry of it falling off and the lawn seed, or feed spilling out of the unit. Highly recommended
- Versatile: For the expulsion of sand, streus salt and split in winter or fertilizer and seeds in summer

Miracle-Gro Lawn Seed Drop Spreader
Miracle-Gro is a well known brand in the gardening sector, but rest assured that you don’t need to use their feed or seed in this spreader. This is a spreader for those that have larger gardens and really want to be as accurate as possible when it comes to putting down new seed, as well as feeding the lawn with a granular feed.
I like that you can carry a lot of product in this drop spreader, but you can also select the drop rate. The benefit of this is that you can save product with this, as opposed to throwing down the product using your hands which can result in an uneven distribution, as well as costing you more time and money in wasted product.
It is very easy to select the drop rate with the built in dial. Likewise, it is also easy to push around the garden. It’s honestly like pushing around an extremely light lawn mower in that you should move it around the lawn slowly (approx 1 metre per second). It is very well built, and more importantly, it spread the feed in such uniformity that it resulted in the grass being properly fed.
- Suitable for medium to large lawns with a 45 cm spreading width

Gardena Hand Held Spreader M
Another Gardena offering here. In this case, it can hold more granular lawn feed than the one listed above, although slightly less grass seed.
It is a manual spreader in that you need to crank the handle as well as push down the trigger to release the feed or seed from it. There is also an easy to use dial to allow you to change how much product is released from the spreader. After this, it’s just the case of walking over the area that you want the product to be distributed over.
When using this, I was curious to see how easy it was to use, and if any product would get jammed in the mechanism. Using it was effortless and the fine adjustment really did make a real difference in how much product I wanted on the grass. Likewise, I did not notice any of the product being jammed in the unit.
In terms of the results from it, the seed I spread over the area was widespread enough and I got even growth from them. Likewise, I got an even spread of the granular lawn feed which resulted in the lawn looking great.
However, it should be noted that the appearance of the lawn is also based on the quality of the feed and seed. Having said that, if the hand spreader didn’t work properly, you would get an uneven appearance.
I would say that this spreader is for those that have a medium sized garden and want to go over it in a quick time frame.
- Usable year-round: In warm seasons, the Hand-Held Spreader can be used to spread fertiliser or seeds; in the winter it can be used for salting walkways; its break-proof plastic makes it durable
