Hedges can be a real pain to trim properly if they’ve been left to grow out of control for a long period of time. In addition to this, the height and thickness of them can also make it a challenge to cut them in such a way that won’t damage it and make it look unsightly.

With that in mind, I’ve spent over a year testing out various products. Below, you will be able to find my top picks for the best hedge trimmers on the market. When deciding which ones are the best, I’ve factored in the ease of use, it’s overall functionality and also the cost of it in relation to this criteria.

By doing so, I am able to give you an informed decision on this. I tested these on three different hedges of varying ages and states of repair, as well as heights. This has also assisted in me being able to give a more rounded conclusion on which the best ones are.

I would also recommend that you check out this page on the best leaf blowers as these can be used to quickly clean up the hedge trimmings.  Also, you should also pick up safety googles if you don’t already have them before cutting your hedge.

Bosch UniversalHedge Cut 60 Trimmer

I had a Bosch hedge trimmer that lasted for over 10 years of hard use. When I saw this version, I was very curious about it. One of the big draws for me was the claim of how much quieter it was to the previous models. In short, Bosch were correct. It is a lot quieter than the models that they used to have, which is a massive plus point for me.

This is a corded hedge trimmer, but you get a healthy 10 metre cable which of course can be plugged into an extension lead, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

On all three hedges I tried this on, it really did excel in cutting through the hedge. More importantly, it also gave a very clean finish on it. This is in part thanks to the powerful motor that is in it. However, as with any cutting, this should be done at a slow pace.

I found that the 60cm blade on this to be a great length, and the hedge is also well balanced which makes the cutting easier as well.

It isn’t that heavy either and the secondary handle on the top of the trimmer is great for holding it in different angles, which is very handy when you’re wanting to style the hedge. Again, this also allowed a uniform cut to take place on it.

When using it on a hedge that had been neglected for quite some time, there was more than enough power in it to also bring about an excellent finish on it. This is thanks to the spaces between the blades being a generous 30mm, allowing it to really get in

I did need to use step ladders for the particular taller hedge, but thanks to the 60cm blade, I did not need to over extend myself on this.

During the testing, I did not experience any discomfort from holding it for long periods of time, so it’s another plus point for it. More impressive is that despite being on for long periods of time, I didn’t feel any labouring in the motor which would have impacted it’s cutting ability.

It is a modestly priced unit,  (on average costing £130) and when looked after (Bosch recommend that you use their lubricant spray), I’ve go no doubt that it’ll last you a long period of time. It also comes with a Bosch 3 year warranty.

Einhell GE-CH 1855 Cordless Hedge Trimmer

I really like the Einhell range of tools, they’re modestly priced but also perform really well. With that in mind, I wanted to try out their hedge trimmer.

I purchased the version that also comes with a 2.5Ah battery and charger to see how well it performs. In terms of blade length, it has a cutting length of 55cm, so just a tad shorter than the Bosch listed above. With respect to the spacing between the blades, this is 18mm, so again a bit shorter than the Bosch.

Despite it being a cordless hedge trimmer, I found this to have a lot of power in it.

When cutting the taller hedges, the long cutting blade was again a great bonus. When it came to the hedge that hadn’t been done for quite some time, it did take a few more passes to get this completed to my level of satisfaction. This was due to the slightly smaller spacing between the cutting blades.

Regardless, when taking my time with this, I really got an excellent cut from it and was very impressed with how will it worked.

In terms of ergonomics, I found that the Einhell hedge trimmer was very comfortable to hold during my entire testing. I really like how adjustable the handle is on it, and it meant I was able to hold it the angle that was most comfortable to me.

There is also an attachment on it that will help to collect the cuttings when you’re cutting the tops of hedges. I found this to be pretty decent actually, and not just a simple gimmick.

It is a tad lighter than the Bosch, and that’s with the battery included. In terms of the battery life, Einhell claim you can get up to 100 minutes of use from this. I found that this varied depending on how thick the hedge was, but it never dropped to more than 90 minutes of use.

The charging time was also very impressive with it being just over 40 minutes.

If you’re looking for a cordless hedge trimmer for light to medium work and is also modestly priced with a 3 year warranty, this is the option for you.

Greenworks G40HT61K2 Cordless Hedge Trimmer

Greenworks are another well known brand in the garden space, and I wanted to try out their hedge trimmer.

This version does come with its own battery and charger, and its surprisingly good value for money.

The cutting length on this is the longest of all three I’ve covered, with it being 61cm long. It also has a very respectable cutting width of 27mm.

As with the other two on this list, it is a very ergonomic hedge trimmer. The unit can actually rotate, meaning that when you’re holding it, it is very comfortable, even during prolonged cutting sessions.

Thanks to its extra length, it makes cutting higher hedges easy when standing on a step ladder. It also makes it more efficient as you’re spending less time cutting it.

I also found this to be excellent at cutting all three hedges I tested this on, and I did not need to go over it again to smooth out any areas, unlike the Einhell that did need some extra attention. The finish on it was smooth, and the overall it made all the hedges look brilliant.

The noise from it was acceptable, although not as quiet as the Bosch listed above. Having said that, it’s not a noisy brute of a machine.

The concern of course is with the amount of power from it, how long the battery would last for on a single charge. On average, I was able to get 40 minutes from a charge, which is very impressive. When it came to charging it, the battery was full within an hour. I found this to be perfectly suitable for my needs, although you can also pick up another battery if you feel this is necessary.

The hedge trimmer has a 3 year warranty and the battery has a 2 year warranty.

If you’re needing a powerful, yet affordable cordless hedge trimmer that will be able to carry out all of your cutting needs in one pass, this Greenworks variant is the option for you.
